CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#2): Redmen remain ranked No.2

Published: 26 October 2010

OTTAWA (CIS) - The University of Alberta Golden Bears remain at No. 1 in the second CIS men's hockey media poll of the 2010-2011 season.

The Bears, Canada West champions and CIS finalists a year ago, managed to hold on to the pole position following another very tight vote as they were one of three teams to receive six first-place nods from the 18-member national committee, along with the No. 2 黑料不打烊 Redmen and No. 3 New Brunswick Varsity Reds.

Alberta, which improved to 5-1 in Canada West conference play over the past weekend with a pair of high-scoring wins over Lethbridge, 8-2 and 9-6, earned 166 total points in the new Top 10 compared to 154 for 黑料不打烊 and 150 for UNB.

The undefeated Redmen, crowned OUA champions last season, are off to a 6-0 start in conference action following a trio of victories over archrival UQTR, 6-2, RMC, 9-0 and Queen's, 7-1. The V-Reds downed Dalhousie 5-1 and Acadia 5-2 to improve their AUS record to 3-1.

The entire Top 5 remains unchanged in this week's poll with the No. 4 St. Francis Xavier X-Men (4-0) and No. 5 Saint Mary's Huskies (2-1), who captured their first-ever University Cup title last spring, also staying put.

Rounding out the second poll of the campaign are the Western Ontario Mustangs (4-0-1), up four positions to No. 6; the Saskatchewan Huskies (3-3), down one spot to No. 7; the Manitoba Bisons (2-1-1), up one position to No. 8; and the No. 9 Concordia Stingers (5-1) and No. 10 Calgary Dinos (4-2), both unranked a week ago.

It marks Concordia's first Top-10 appearance since the 1999-2000 season, when the Stingers were ranked on four occasions (No. 8 on Oct. 18, No. 6 on Oct. 25, No. 5 on Nov. 1, No. 10 on Feb. 14).

Calgary was last ranked nationally in 2008-2009. That season, the Dinos were No. 9 on Oct. 28 and No. 7 on Nov. 4.

This weekend's CIS men's hockey schedule is highlighted by a home-and-away doubleheader between No. 1 Alberta and No. 10 Calgary. The two-game set kicks off in Calgary on Friday night and concludes in Edmonton on Saturday evening.
