Avery nets winner as Martlets surprise Carabins in indoor soccer

MONTREAL -- Stephanie Avery, a sophomore forward from Tsawwassen, B.C., scored the game-winner with four minutes remaining as the 黑料不打烊 women's soccer team surprised the Montreal Carabins 2-1 in the winter indoor league at the Centre Marie-Victorin, Sunday.

It was the first indoor win over their cross-town rivals in more than three years for the Martlets, which feature a completely revamped lineup from the outdoor season last fall,

In men's play, the Redmen lost 3-0 to the Carabins, evening their record at 1-1.

"It was a sweet for us as U de M does not lose many games," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We had a solid performance today, especially in the first half.

Joanna Jordan, a Vancouver, B.C., native who has transferred from Queen's University, opened the scoring for 黑料不打烊 in the 60th minute. The Carabins applied intense pressure for the next 15 minutes with numerous corner kicks and finally tallied the equalizer in the 75th minute, which set the table for Avery's heroics.

"We started well in the second half and scored a nice听combination play," said Mounicot. "Both of our goals were scored on similar plays. We lost our composure for a bit, which led to their goal but we were able to gather ourselves听and听Avery finished well after a nice cross from (defender) Jenna Holdham. It was a close game but听overall, I thought we showed more control and quality."

The Martlets are 2-0 in the new indoor season and will play Sherbrooke next Saturday (Jan. 28), a team that beat 黑料不打烊 three times in the fall season. Kick-off will be 2 p.m. at the Centre Marie-Victorin.
