2011 Winter Universiade: Women's hockey: Reigning champ Canada improves to 2-0

ERZURUM, Turkey (CIS) - Brock University netminder Beth Clause of Hamilton, Ont., claimed a shutout as defending champion Canada earned a 3-0 win over Slovakia in the second game of pool play of the Winter Universiade women's hockey tournament at Cemal Gursel Arena, on Friday.

The Canadians opened the tournament with a 2-1 shootout win over Finland Thursday evening and now are holding top spot in the tournament with a 2-0 record, two points ahead of Slovakia (1-1), Great Britain (1-1) and the United States (1-1). Slovakia's win came against the Americans, by 5 -1, also on Thursday.

Clause got the starting role in this game after Wilfrid Laurier's Liz Knox of Stouffville, Ont., claimed the win in the first game of the tournament. The Brock goalie faced only six shots in the contest in comparison to Canada's barrage of 47 on Zuzana Tomcikova.

"We made a big step today and got off to a great start and then dominated them," commented Canadian head coach Les Lawton of Concordia University. "We showed great passion and intensity especially after yesterday's game. We found our identity today and this is what we'll work with to improve for the upcoming games."

Three different Canadians contributed to the output, all in the first period. University of Guelph forward Jessica Zerafa of Mississauga, Ont., scored the game-winner and later assisted on the third goal.
听
Canada opened the scoring midway through the first with the Zerafa goal. Five minutes later Saskatchewan forward Breanne George of Saskatoon, and Concordia's Erin Lally of Calgary netted goals 37 seconds apart to put the game away.
听
Canada took advantage of only one of four power play opportunities and continues their perfection in penalty kill situations.
听
Defender Suzanne Fenerty of Cole Harbour, N.S., acknowledged the success the team has had in generating some pressure on the opposition.
听
"The two quick goals were important and set the pace for us," commented the veteran member of the St. Francis Xavier hockey program. "The first period had some strong energy and we'll work on the second and third as we continue to develop together. We know how we can play and we have higher expectations and we'll go up from here."
听
Canada (2-0) resumes round-robin play Sunday at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) against Great Britain (1-1).
