In this session, Professor Colford will discuss a variety of study designs and methods employed by epidemiologists, economists, and public policy investigators to generate evidence through 鈥淚mpact Evaluations鈥� of public health programs; the focus will be on programs related to global health and development.听 The underlying principles will be illustrated with detailed examples employing cluster randomized trials, matched cohorts, regression discontinuity, and stepped wedge designs.听 The role of (and adjustment for) participant compliance will be highlighted with a discussion of a proposed estimator of complier average causal effects.

Jack Colford is a Professor of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.听 He trained at Johns Hopkins (medical school), UC San Francisco (Internal Medicine residency, Infectious Diseases fellowship, HIV/AIDS fellowship), Stanford (Chief Medical Resident), and UC Berkeley (MPH and PhD in Epidemiology).听 He has received clinical and classroom teaching awards at Stanford, UC San Francisco, and UC Berkeley.听 Each year, he teaches three semester-long courses at UC Berkeley on Intervention Trial Design, Impact Evaluation, and Epidemiologic Methods.听 Colford鈥檚 principal research focus is on interventions designed to reduce diseases related to water, sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition.听 He has been the Principal Investigator of four NIH R01 awards as well as NIH R03 and R21 awards.听 He is the Principal Investigator of the WASH Benefits trial (washbenefits.org) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.听 WASH Benefits is a 7-arm RCT enrolling 15,000 children in Kenya and Bangladesh designed to evaluate the separate and combined impacts of early childhood interventions targeting water, sanitation, hygiene, and nutritional status on growth and development.
