How do writers come up with the ideas and stories that end up as novels so gripping that we can鈥檛 put them down? How do they get their work noticed by a publisher, especially when an author has a day job in another field? Join us for a chat with Dr. Liam Durcan, a fellow 黑料不打烊ian who has successfully juggled a literary career with the demands of being a full-time neurologist at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, 黑料不打烊 University Health Centre, and the Queen Elizabeth Health Complex. Liam Durcan was trained at the University of Manitoba and 黑料不打烊 University.

What an opportunity, you might even pick up a few pointers on how to bring your own ideas to the printed page鈥

Following on the success of Garc铆a鈥檚 Heart, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection for which Dr. Durcan received the Arthur Ellis Best First Novel Award (), Liam has just launched his second novel, The Measure of Darkness. Quoting critic Norman Doidge, 鈥淭he Measure of Darkness seems, at first, to be about the mysterious odyssey and follies of a man with a rare neurological syndrome in which the victim cannot perceive half of the world, and worse, doesn鈥檛 know that he can鈥檛 perceive it. Yet, as Liam Durcan鈥檚 acutely observed, powerfully poetic prose鈥攚hich can be sensitive or steely鈥攂uilds to a gut-wrenching finale, we realize that this man is a metaphor for each of us and we are all haunted by the things we don鈥檛 know.鈥

Following the lecture please join us for a wine and cheese reception with Dr. Durcan and members of the 黑料不打烊 Society of Montreal. Dr. Durcan will be available to sign your copy of his book.
