Cells sense the biochemical and biophysical properties of their extracellular matrix environment through integrin-mediated adhesions. The resultant signals play major roles in guiding development, physiology, and normal tissue remodeling required for homeostasis.听 Conversely, altered integrin-dependent signals contribute to pathological tissue remodeling in cancer, fibrosis, atherosclerosis, and aneurysms.听 I will present our recent work toward understanding fundamental, biophysical mechanisms of force transmission and mechanotransduction through integrins, and the roles of matrix remodeling and integrin signaling in vascular disease.
